Amber Rudd MP was the Chair of the cross-party inquiry looking into the issue of unwanted pregnancy in the UK (download the report from the link above). The inquiry was supported by 2020health, a think tank whose purpose is to create the conditions for a healthy society. The inquiry was set up in the backdrop of striking trends in unwanted pregnancy:
- Abortion rates in some age groups have markedly risen in the past few years, with abortions rising 10 per cent in the 30-34 age groups over the last three years. The proportion of repeat abortions has also risen over the past decade, increasing from 31 per cent of all abortions in 2001 to 36 per cent in 2011.
- Although teenage pregnancy in the UK has declined over the past decade, it remains the highest in Western Europe.
